Four US firms commit $2B to Korea's chip and clean energy supply chains

What changes on the ground? Each firm targets a different node of Korea's industrial base. Air Products will build infrastructure to supply ultra-high-purity gases, rare gases, and hydrogen to a semiconductor hub in Pyeongtaek. Axcelis will expand its ion implanter plant there — Korea is the only country outside the US where it makes the front-end process tool.

More detail: Corning, in Korea since 1973, will introduce next-generation process technology and upgrade production at its site in Asan. Pacifico Energy is pursuing a 3.2-gigawatt offshore wind farm off Jindo to help power AI data centers.

What's the endgame? Axcelis plans to add research, prototyping, and training functions to develop its Korean site into a technology innovation hub. The broader aim is to deepen supply chain ties between the two countries and widen Korea's domestic manufacturing base.

Why now? The commitments feed directly into the Korean government's three mega projects spanning semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI.
