Anthropic hires UK AI strategy architect Matt Clifford ahead of $2T IPO
What's the deal? Matt Clifford, who authored the UK government's AI strategy, has joined US startup AnthropicDealroom has a profile for this one. Why now? Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, is preparing for a stock exchange flotation that could value it at $2tn (£1.5tn). Clifford joins a year after stepping down as Keir Starmer's unpaid AI opportunities adviser, a role he resigned from after six months for personal reasons.
What's the endgame? The hire deepens Anthropic's reach into governments as it scales globally ahead of the offering. "Countries everywhere want real agency over how this technology is built and used, and my job is to make Anthropic a genuine partner in that — in Europe, Asia and beyond," Clifford said.
Who is Clifford? He co-founded venture firm Entrepreneurs First, which has helped build tech companies worth a combined $20bn. He advised Rishi Sunak's government at the 2023 AI Safety Summit and helped create the body that became the AI Security Institute.
What could go wrong? Clifford will remain chair of Aria, the UK's government-backed research funding agency, prompting conflict-of-interest concerns. Chi Onwurah, who heads the Commons science, innovation and technology committee, called it a "clear conflict of interest" and urged AI minister Kanishka Narayan to set boundaries. Clifford is understood to be stepping back from any Anthropic-related matter at Aria.
The signal: The move underscores a well-worn path from Westminster to Silicon Valley — Nick Clegg joined Meta in 2018, Sunak later took roles at Microsoft and Anthropic, and George Osborne joined OpenAI. As Anthropic courts regulators worldwide before a mega-listing, hiring government insiders is becoming a core part of how AI firms build influence.
