What's the endgame? The partners are targeting extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, which uses 92 eV light to etch tiny circuit patterns onto chips for AI and high-performance computing. Its resolution is limited by radiation-induced blurring, a quantum phenomenon that classical computers struggle to simulate.
In this phase, parameters computed by Xanadu's fault-tolerant quantum algorithms will feed directly into Mitsubishi Chemical's models to predict electron blur and identify new blur-resistant materials. The algorithms aim to model photoabsorption with fewer than 500 qubits, targeting early fault-tolerant hardware.
Why now? The move follows Phase 1, which showed quantum algorithms could model the optical properties of photoresists. Phase 2 shifts toward a production-ready computational pipeline, led by Xanadu chief executive officer Christian Weedbrook and Mitsubishi Chemical senior chief scientist Qi Gao.
