What's the endgame? RobotStart runs a digital audio ad network for podcasts. More than 400 podcasters have joined, and the company partners with radio stations to place ads on top-ranked programs and works with over 100 ad agencies to build its sales network.

Why now? The US podcast advertising market reached $2.9 billion in 2025, roughly 27 times larger than a decade ago, according to the IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report. Japan has lagged, but investors say the local market is entering a phase of broader adoption.

Where's the money going? RobotStart plans to strengthen its sales operation, pursue partnerships with overseas companies, and develop cross-industry collaborations. Its stated goal is to become the leading company in Japan's podcast sector.

Investor view: "In the US, podcasts have grown rapidly and are establishing themselves as a new media platform," said Kotaro Ike of Innoh AssociatesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, general partner of the Brand New Retail Initiative Fund (translated from Japanese). KP Partners co-founder Hideaki Kamio, who backed the company from its early days, said no other market he knows of had grown globally yet failed to take off in Japan the way podcast advertising had.

The signal: The round is a bet that Japan's podcast ad market is finally catching up to the US, with early infrastructure players positioned to capture a market others have found slow to start.
