Facet Amtech raises $2.1M to make ammonia from air and water

What's the endgame? Founded in 2024 by mechanical engineers Peter Richardson and James Bradley, Facet Amtech targets ammonia, a key input for nitrogen fertilisers. Conventional production makes hydrogen and nitrogen separately, then combines them; the startup uses a single catalyst to split water and reduce nitrogen at the same time.

Why does it matter? Removing dedicated hydrogen production could cut the biggest cost in ammonia making. "Today, the majority of the cost of making ammonia is from the natural gas or from the electricity that goes into making the green hydrogen, which we're not doing," Richardson told AgFunderNews.

The process still needs heat and pressure but can run under milder conditions than the standard Haber-Bosch method. The catalyst uses pure metal powders — no platinum-group metals or rare earths — at a cost Richardson expects to match or beat conventional iron-based catalysts.

What's next? The first scale-up test is planned for early 2027, aiming for one kilogram of ammonia per day. A second pilot targeting roughly 100 kilograms per day would follow about two years later, building toward a four-tonne-per-day pilot by the early 2030s.

What could go wrong? The catalyst must prove it can run continuously at scale. Facet Amtech is targeting more than 2,000 hours of uninterrupted operation in a future pilot — a key milestone before industrial deployment.

The company plans to license its technology and supply its catalyst to major fertiliser producers rather than build and run plants itself.

The signal: At $2.1 million, the seed round sits in the smaller tier of funding deals, reflecting an early-stage bet on unproven catalyst science. If it works, the payoff is a simpler, cheaper route to one of the world's most important industrial chemicals.
