Vanguard to acquire longtime investment Altruist, its advisor tech platform

What's the deal? VanguardDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has agreed to acquire Altruist, an AI-forward wealth technology and custody platform serving financial advisors. The two firms announced the definitive agreement on August 26, 2026. Terms were not disclosed.

Why now? VanguardDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → first invested in Altruist in 2020 to bring competition to the registered investment advisor (RIA) custody space. It has known Altruist's people and platform for years before moving to full ownership.

What's the endgame? Vanguard says the deal gives Altruist greater capacity to invest in its advisor technology and custody capabilities, backed by Vanguard's reach and investment expertise. The goal is to help advisors serve more clients as demand for financial advice outpaces the industry's capacity.

"Technology can help close that gap by enabling advisors to serve more people and serve them better, while preserving the human judgment and relationships at the center of good financial advice," said Salim Ramji, chief executive officer of Vanguard.

What changes? After closing, Altruist is expected to operate as a standalone business, keeping its leadership, brand, advisor focus, and distinct operating model. The structure aims to preserve the speed and entrepreneurial culture that shaped Altruist's growth.

"Vanguard shares our conviction in that mission, and their trusted investment expertise and resources will enable us to pursue it with greater speed and reach," said Jason Wenk, founder and chief executive officer of Altruist.

The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals.

The signal: Founded in 1975, Vanguard serves tens of millions of investors, many of whom now choose to work with financial advisors. Buying its longtime portfolio company signals a bet that AI-enabled tools — not just low-cost funds — will define how the industry scales advice to more people.
