Principal Mineral raises $280M Series A to rebuild Western PCB supply chains

What's the deal? Principal Mineral, a US company rebuilding strategic manufacturing capacity in the advanced-electronics supply chain for NATO countries, has raised roughly $280 million in a Series A round. What's the endgame? The company targets the missing link between raw-material access and advanced-tech production, focusing on materials for printed circuit boards (PCBs) — the base of nearly every modern electronic system, from data centres and smartphones to satellites, radars, and missile systems.

Why now? Over recent decades, much PCB material production shifted from the US and Europe to Asia, concentrating output and creating a risk point for Western supply chains in national-security and advanced-tech sectors. R+ VC frames the war in Ukraine, AI infrastructure growth, and rising geopolitical tensions as proof that control over the whole production chain — not just finished products — matters for state security.

Rather than building factories from scratch, Principal Mineral buys, modernises, and expands existing strategic industrial assets. In 2025 it acquired and restarted Camden CopperDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in South Carolina, North America's only producer of electrodeposited copper foil. Where the money goes: Proceeds will fund integration of the acquired assets, expanded production capacity, technology development, and further investment across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The signal: The round sits above the 99th percentile of all-time Series A rounds in US energy, a scale that reflects how far its private-equity-style rollup diverges from classic venture. For R+ VC, the bet extends its thesis beyond the US: rebuilding the strategic industrial base and Western supply chains it sees as essential to defence, dual-use, and deep-tech resilience — a challenge it argues is not America's alone.
