Generalist raises $200M for robot brains, two months after $400M round

What's the deal? Generalist AI has raised roughly $200 million in a late-stage round led by 8VC, coming just two months after the robotics AI startup raised $400 million. The company disclosed the round in a federal filing but did not respond to Axios' request for comment.

What's the endgame? Generalist builds AI models — not robotic hardware — designed to help robots understand and operate in the physical world, including improving dexterity. It was founded by alumni of Google DeepMind and Boston Dynamics.

Who's backing it? Alongside 8VC, the round drew several existing investors, including Nvidia, Bezos Expeditions, Radical VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Why now? Cash is flying fast for companies building "robot brains," and Generalist raised again barely two months after its last round. Expect it to seek even more money, likely with an outside lead investor, given the VC frenzy for such companies.

The signal: The round ranks in the 93rd percentile by size among all-time late-stage deep tech deals in the US, out of more than 1,500 comparable rounds. That scale reflects investor appetite for AI that could reshape blue-collar work.
