Micron bets $10B on new AI memory research lab in Boise

What's the endgame? Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra said the effort looks beyond Micron's current roadmap toward the memory and computing systems that increasingly demanding AI workloads may require. The lab will build on a portfolio of more than 62,000 lifetime patents and is expected to break ground on a flagship facility in 2027, hosting hundreds of researchers plus conferences and innovation forums.
The announcement drew support from some of Micron's biggest customers, including Nvidia (NVDA) chief executive Jensen Huang and Apple (AAPL) chief executive Tim Cook. Huang called memory reinvention "one of the great challenges of the AI era" and said Micron is helping "drive the breakthroughs that will define the next era of AI and computing." Cook, noting Micron has supplied memory for Apple products for more than two decades, said the lab builds "on a legacy of leadership in semiconductor research to drive breakthroughs in memory and computing for decades to come."
Why now? Memory has become a bottleneck as AI models grow, and Micron is positioning itself at the centre of that constraint. By anchoring a dedicated research lab in the US — with public backing from its largest customers and Washington — the company is tying its future to both the AI build-out and the domestic manufacturing push. The commitment expands Micron's broader US push: in July 2026, the company outlined plans to invest more than $250 billion in US manufacturing, research and development.
