How it works: The XSTAT P15 inserts a pouch of miniature sponges into wounds caused by gunshots or shrapnel. The sponges expand within seconds to absorb blood and apply constant pressure without manual compression. A mesh bag holds the sponges so they can be removed easily during surgery.
Why now? Hemorrhaging causes roughly 20% of combat deaths. Service members can use the applicator without extra training, making it a portable, accessible tool that reduces the load on those in the field.
What's the endgame? The APFIT award targets a familiar bottleneck: manufacturing capacity. Thomas Dunn, acting program manager for NAMD, called the award "a major milestone in our ongoing mission to deliver next-generation life-saving capabilities to the fleet and field." He added that the program "accelerates our ability to transition this vital technology directly into the hands of our corpsmen and medics."
The signal: The funding shows the Pentagon leaning on small, domestic vendors to convert cleared medical technology into fielded equipment. For startups in defence medtech, APFIT is a route past the manufacturing gap that often stalls promising devices before they reach users.
