HexSeed raises $811K to cool AI data centres with diamond coatings

What's the endgame? The startup, working with University of BristolDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → researchers, is developing a way to apply ultra-thin diamond coatings to electronic components in data centre power systems. Diamond is one of the world's most effective heat conductors, so the coatings could help components run cooler, more efficiently, and for longer.

The technical hurdle: existing methods for applying diamond require temperatures that would damage finished semiconductors. HexSeed is developing a low-temperature process that can coat completed gallium nitride (GaN) devices without harming them.

Why now? Data centres already consume a significant share of global electricity, and the International Energy AgencyDealroom has a profile for this one. GaN transistors are more efficient than silicon, but managing the heat they generate remains a major challenge.

The company's first target is power conversion hardware for hyperscale data centres. HexSeed was founded by chief executive officer Mark Tandy, chief technology officer Leonardo Santoni, and chief operating officer Michael Glerum. It is working with University of Bristol Professors Paul May, a diamond materials expert, and Martin Kuball, a specialist in semiconductor devices and heat management.

"Data centres are on track to consume a significant share of UK grid capacity within the decade, and a large proportion of that energy is lost as heat in power conversion," said Tandy. The funding will move the technology "from laboratory demonstration to working GaN devices," he added.

The signal: At $811,000, HexSeed's raise sits near the middle of comparable seed rounds — modest, but typical for a research-led hardware startup still proving its process. As AI drives data centre power demand higher, efficiency at the component level is becoming a market of its own.
