Green Light Biosciences bets $100M on Mexico's first RNA biofungicide plant

What's the deal? Green Light Biosciences will invest US$100 million to build a biofungicide production plant in Mexico, alongside other biotechnology-based agricultural inputs. The molecules use RNA technology to deactivate specific genes in pests and fungi without harming other organisms or leaving toxic residues in soil, water, or crops.

What's the endgame? The facilities would be brand-new and the first of their kind in Mexico. The company aims to register what would be the world's first RNA biofungicide, expected to replace chemical pesticides on major crops in the medium term.

Why now? The location is undisclosed, but officials cite Mexico's talent pool of 11,000 life sciences graduates annually and proximity to Mexico City International Airport, Felipe Ángeles International Airport, and Toluca International Airport, according to Arturo Adolfo Palacios Romo of the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco).

What's the regulatory path? Under Plan Mexico, three agencies — the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris), the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica), and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) — will jointly evaluate the scientific data within nine months of the application, said founder Andrey Zarur.
