Rune raises $7M to turn wasted solar power into AI compute
What's the deal? Rune Energy, which places modular data centers on solar and wind farms to consume power grids would otherwise throw away, has raised $7 million in an early VC round. Lowercarbon CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Union Square Ventures, and Danish turbine maker VestasDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → backed the Palo Alto startup, formerly known as Liitto Technology.
The company previously raised $5.6 million in July 2024, according to SEC filings. Earlier backers include Silicon CatalystDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Mission One CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.
The signal: Rune Energy's model reflects a broader convergence of surging AI compute demand and mounting renewable curtailment. By moving the load to the source rather than the power to the load, the startup is betting that the cheapest way to feed hungry data centers is to catch electricity before the grid throws it away.
