Thrive Capital invests $215m in Amazon
What's the deal? Thrive Capital has bought roughly $215m worth of shares in Amazon, according to a regulatory filing disclosed on 14 August 2026 and reported by Bloomberg. The purchase gives the venture firm exposure to a large public technology company benefiting from artificial-intelligence demand, including through agentic AI shopping tools and cloud-computing infrastructure for business customers.
Investment context: The purchase is part of Thrive's broader push into public-market investments. Earlier in 2026, the firm told limited partners it had invested about $100m in Shopify, citing e-commerce tailwinds from artificial intelligence. Thrive's other reported public-market holdings include Figma, StubHub and Oscar HealthDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, which Joshua Kushner co-founded and incubated. Thrive is also known for early investments in companies including SpaceXDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Stripe and OpenAI; Amazon is also an investor in OpenAI.
Why it matters: In a letter sent to limited partners in the week of 11 August 2026, Kushner explained the rationale for investing beyond private companies: “Many of our growth-stage companies compete with, partner with, or become the next generation of public technology companies. The more precise our understanding of public markets, the better our judgment will be in private markets.” The Amazon purchase therefore appears intended not only as a standalone public-market position, but also as a way for Thrive to deepen its understanding of a major technology platform and the markets in which its private investments operate. Amazon surpassed a $3tn market capitalisation earlier in August 2026. Thrive declined to comment, and an Amazon representative did not immediately respond to Bloomberg's requests for comment.
