Sila secures $1.4B Pentagon loan to scale US battery manufacturing

What's the deal? SilaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has received a conditional loan commitment of up to $1.4 billion from the US Department of War's Office of Strategic CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The financing will expand silicon-carbon anode production at its Moses Lake, Washington plant and fund a new lithium-ion battery cell facility.

Why now? US battery buyers — from automakers to defense contractors — struggle to source materials made outside China, which controls over 90% of anode processing and over 80% of global cell production. Sila's Moses Lake factory is one of few anode sources free of tariffs or geopolitical exposure.

What's the endgame? Sila makes a silicon-carbon anode material, Titan Silicon, that promises to store 20% to 40% more electricity than graphite. The company is expanding Moses Lake fivefold — enough material for more than 100,000 EVs — and building a cell facility for specialty uses such as industrial, agricultural, and military drones.

The money trail: The loan follows a $300 million equity round in July led by Atreides ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Sutter Hill Ventures. To date, Sila has raised more than $1.5 billion from private investors, according to PitchBook.

Wider push: Alongside Sila, the Department of DefenseDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → announced deals with three other companies: a $400 million loan to Australia's Sunrise Energy MetalsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for scandium mining, a $150 million loan to Niron Magnetics for rare earth-free magnets, and an $85 million equity investment in Strategic BauxiteDealroom has a profile for this one. What could go wrong? The commitment is conditional. Sila must satisfy financial, legal, technical, and other conditions before signing definitive financing documents.

The signal: With demand for batteries outside China set to triple over the next five years, Washington is treating domestic battery supply as a defense priority.
