MGI Engineering's F1-built SkyShark strike drone heads to production for October 2026
MGI Engineering — the Witney, Oxfordshire firm founded by ex-Formula 1 aerodynamicist Mike Gascoyne — is moving its SkyShark one-way effector (OWE) from prototype to production, targeting availability from October 2026 with a manufacturing ramp continuing into 2027. The Defence Blog covered the platform on 8 August 2026 under the name "TigerShark", but MGI's own designation for the system is SkyShark.
SkyShark is a high-speed, single-use strike drone pitched as a low-cost, sovereign British alternative to cruise missiles such as Storm Shadow or Tomahawk. Published specifications put its top speed at 750 km/h (466 mph), range at 900 km (559 miles) at cruise, and payload at a modular 300 kg configurable for high-explosive strike or electronic-warfare missions. It is built to operate autonomously in GPS-denied and spoofed environments, pairing inertial navigation with GPS-free terrain mapping — an autonomy core supplied by Auterion.
The company draws directly on its Formula 1 engineering heritage — lightweight structures, rapid iteration and cost-down manufacturing — to make the platform cheap and quick to build at scale. MGI first unveiled SkyShark publicly at DSEI in London in September 2025 and demonstrated two variants at Enstone Airfield on 11 July 2025: one powered by Oxford-based Argive's A300 sovereign gas-turbine engines, and a low-signature electric variant using Greenjets HS125 ducted fans. First flight tests followed in April 2026.
SkyShark's development sits within the UK Ministry of Defence's Project Brakestop, an initiative to accelerate long-range autonomous strike systems. MGI holds a development contract under the programme and is competing for the eventual production award against MBDA UK's Crossbow OWE and Rotron Aerospace's propeller-driven SkyLance. The platform is manufactured entirely in the UK and licensed for export to allied nations.
