Convex raises $57M Series B for its AI-optimised app backend

What's the deal?

Convex has closed a $57 million Series B round led by Insight Partners , with Etna Labs , Andreessen Horowitz , and Spark Capital also taking part. The deal brings the developer tooling startup's total outside funding to $110.5 million.

What does Convex do?

Founded in 2021 by former members of Dropbox 's infrastructure engineering team, it sells an application backend — a set of pre-packaged building blocks companies use to develop custom software. The platform powers nearly 2 million applications, with customers including OpenAI and Zapier .

What's the differentiator?

Convex says its backend is optimised for AI agents, helping developers avoid hallucination-related coding errors. Its database replaces standard SQL queries with TypeScript to reduce type errors, and it pre-packages code for tasks such as real-time data syncing that AI agents otherwise struggle to generate correctly.

What's the endgame?

The platform bundles a database with a search tool, an authentication mechanism, a file storage system, and a retrieval-augmented generation feature for extending AI agents' knowledge with custom datasets. Convex will use the funding to hire and improve the product.

Why it matters, in the founder's words:

"Agents reach for the first thing that works, and on most backends the first thing that works is subtly, silently wrong. You'll find out weeks later, in production," said co-founder and chief executive officer Jamie Turner. "Convex is that discipline packaged as a product."

The signal:

At $57 million, the round lands in the 91st percentile of all-time Series B deals for US enterprise software startups. That places Convex among the better-funded bets on infrastructure built specifically for the AI-agent coding wave.
