Aiforia secures €20M EIB venture debt for AI cancer detection
Finnish life-science company Aiforia Technologies has raised €20 million in venture debt from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The financing, backed under the European Commission 's InvestEU programme, will fund development of Aiforia's AI-powered platform for digital tissue analysis.
Aiforia builds deep-learning software that helps pathologists examine ultra-high-resolution biopsy images to detect tumours with speed and precision. It plans to use the money to accelerate product development and expand commercial operations internationally.
The financing comes in three tranches, starting with €5 million. Each drawdown requires hitting revenue and other interim targets set in the agreement. The parties also agreed a synthetic warrant arrangement that avoids immediate share dilution for existing shareholders.
The EIB framed the deal as part of Europe's push to keep strategic technologies in-house. "Europe must have the best technologies developed in-house to protect and care for its citizens," said EIB vice-president Karl Nehammer.
Chief executive officer Jukka Tapaninen said the financing "strengthens Aiforia's financial position and supports the implementation of our strategy," letting the company advance its goal of improving patient care through AI image analysis.
The round marks a notable step up from Aiforia's previous financing, and reflects the EIB's growing role in Europe's venture debt market. In 2025, the EIB Group signed €100 billion in new financing across more than 870 projects, increasingly crowding in private capital for high-risk innovative businesses.
