World raises $52.5M token sale to verify humans in the AI era
What's the deal? World, the Sam Altman-backed digital identity project, raised $52.5 million in a locked token sale to expand its verification infrastructure. Pantera Capital led the round, with Bain Capital CryptoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Eightco HoldingsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → participating.
What's the endgame? World runs a network that aims to distinguish real people from bots online. It relies on custom hardware, the Orb, to issue "proof of human" credentials without compromising user privacy.
Why now? The company said the raise comes as it shifts from building the network to scaling its use. It plans to integrate identity technology across enterprise platforms and AI agents.
By the numbers: More than 39 million people have joined the World Network, with over 18 million verified by an Orb. The network has issued more than 475 million World ID proofs since launch.
World, previously known as WorldcoinDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, raised $135 million in its first funding round in May 2025 through a private token sale of its world coin (WLD) to a16z and Bain Capital Crypto. WLD trades at roughly $0.37, with a market capitalisation of just over $1.3 billion.
"The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development, and we see this in the influx of enterprise traction," said Cosmo Jiang, a general partner at Pantera Capital.
The signal: The round sits above the 90th percentile by size among US initial coin offerings all-time, a signal of investor appetite for identity tools as concerns over deepfakes and bots impersonating humans mount. World is betting that proving who is real becomes core infrastructure for an internet increasingly populated by AI agents.
