Aiven acquires Flow AI to run AI agents next to production data

Aiven, the Helsinki-based open data platform, has acquired Flow AI, a fellow Finnish startup building infrastructure for production-grade analytical AI agents. Terms were not disclosed. Flow AI's five-person team — including co-founders Aaro Isosaari , Karolus Sariola , and Bernardo Garcia del Rio — is joining Aiven.

Aiven runs managed open-source data services such as Kafka, PostgreSQL, and ClickHouse across AWS, GCP, and Azure. Flow AI builds the runtime, data layer, and evaluation tooling that lets software teams embed reliable AI agents inside their products.

Aiven wants to run AI agents close to the production data they reason over. "Agents are only as good as the infrastructure serving them," said Oskari Saarenmaa , Aiven's chief executive officer, pointing to data freshness, context reliability, and evaluation quality.

Aiven says the interface to data is changing, with agents becoming the main way businesses interact with their data. Folding Flow AI's tooling into its platform is meant to speed up Aiven's roadmap and cut the complexity that stalls many AI projects.

The two companies are both Helsinki-originated and have co-run the "Context is King" meetup series. Flow AI has built AI products since 2020, starting with the writing tool Flowrite, and was backed by Project A, Lifeline Ventures, and Seedcamp.

Aiven already spans Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific, and recently ran a "Context is King" edition in London. The acquisition extends its reach into agent-native tooling, adding a new product layer on top of its existing data platform.

As enterprises push AI from demos into production, infrastructure players are racing to place agents next to governed data. Aiven's bet is that the winners will own both the interface agents operate in and the pipes beneath them.
