Cognition acquires TierZero to build agents that run software, not just write it
What's the deal? Cognition has acquired TierZeroDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a startup building autonomous tooling for production engineering. Financial terms were not disclosed. TierZero's founders, Anhang Zhu and Yun Park, are joining Cognition to pursue what backer Accel calls a "new standard for autonomous software development."
What does TierZero do? The startup builds a "harness" for AI agents to operate production systems. It integrates across a company's observability stack, instruments and deploys code, resolves failures, and escalates to humans only when judgment is required.
Why now? AI tools have moved from autocomplete to agents that build entire applications, shifting the bottleneck from writing code to operating it. Existing infrastructure — from Datadog and PagerDuty to CI/CD pipelines — was built for humans to watch dashboards, click through UIs, and respond to alerts.
The traction: Since launching quietly in 2025, TierZero has grown to serve tens of thousands of engineers at companies including Brex, Discord, and Drata, resolving thousands of software and infrastructure issues daily. Accel led its seed round.
The founders: Zhu was early at Facebook and part of the founding ReactJS team. Park joined Databricks as engineer #25 in 2015 and most recently led its AI Serving and Ops team. Zhu previously co-founded Mayhem, an Accel-backed startup later acquired by Niantic.
What's the endgame? Cognition wants to remove bottlenecks across the entire software development lifecycle, not just speed up code generation. "It is no longer enough to just accelerate code generation," Accel's Ivan Zhou wrote.
The signal: As agents write more code, the logic goes that the same agents should run the infrastructure it lives on. The deal folds production operations into the autonomous coding push — a bet that the next frontier for AI engineering tools is not writing software, but keeping it running.
