Primrose Bio wins $2M NIH grant to boost genetic medicine performance

How it works: Primrose Bio will use its ultra-high-throughput platform to screen billions of sequences, validate them in cell models, and apply AI-design optimisation. The goal is licensable sequence elements for genetic medicines. The project is led by Patrik Engström, principal scientist at the company.

What's the endgame? The award is a Direct-to-Phase II Small Business Innovation Research grant, building on earlier research into sequence design that improved protein expression. Primrose wants to expand the sequence-based tools it offers partners.

"It expands the sequence-based tools we can offer partners to improve the performance of genetic medicines," said chief executive officer Drew Burch.

Why it matters: Noncoding sequences are control points for protein expression, and better sequences could make DNA- and RNA-based therapies more effective. "Our platform can evaluate billions of candidates and identify those with the greatest potential," Engström said.

The backdrop: Primrose Bio already licenses manufacturing technologies used in marketed products, including its Pfenex Expression Technology, which it says delivers up to 20x higher yields. Merck, Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Alvogen, and Serum Institute of India use its technologies.

The signal: At $2 million, the award sits near the middle of comparable rounds in its window, ranking in roughly the 54th percentile by size. It is a modest but strategic bet on the infrastructure layer of genetic medicine — the sequence and manufacturing tools that other companies build drugs on top of.
