WoodStar debuts with $220M to fuel Accelerant's specialty risk exchange

What's the deal? WoodStar Reciprocal Exchange, a newly formed insurer, has launched with more than $220 million in surplus notes and capital from third-party investors. The backing comes from Kilter FinanceDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? WoodStar is a reciprocal insurance company covering specialty commercial lines for small and medium-sized businesses. Its underwriting will run exclusively through the Accelerant Risk Exchange, a platform that connects specialty insurance underwriters with risk capital providers using analytics and real-time data. WoodStar is expected to begin writing direct business on the exchange during 2027.

Who's involved? Kilter Finance provides capital solutions to small and mid-sized insurers and has led around $1.8 billion in commitments across three strategies. Blue Owl Capital manages $315 billion in assets as of March 31, 2026.

Why now? The partnership advances Accelerant's push to link specialty insurance risk with institutional capital. "WoodStar is another step forward for our platform," said Accelerant chief executive officer Jeff Radke, adding that the firm continues to develop structures for investors to support its growing member base.

How is it structured? WoodStar will be managed by an attorney-in-fact majority owned by Accelerant, alongside unrelated minority investors. Accelerant holds no ownership stake in WoodStar but will supply underwriting, distribution, claims, and other services through contracts.

Kilter chief investment officer Dan Knipe cited Accelerant's "underwriting capabilities, deep MGA network, and differentiated approach to aligning risk and capital." Blue Owl managing director Bharath Subramanian called WoodStar "a structure designed for long-term, capital-efficient growth."

The signal: The launch reflects growing appetite among institutional investors for direct exposure to specialty insurance risk. By channelling capital through a dedicated exchange, Accelerant is positioning itself as a conduit between underwriters and the deep pools of capital now chasing insurance returns.
