EIB lends AIMAG €50M to modernise water services for 200,000 people in Modena

What's the deal? The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a €50 million financing agreement with Italian multiutility AIMAGDealroom has a profile for this one. The financing will support more than 200 upgrades to water, sewerage, and wastewater treatment infrastructure, benefiting around 200,000 people.

What's the endgame? AIMAG plans to renew and lay new water and sewerage pipelines, upgrade wastewater treatment plants, and introduce remote control technologies. The programme also targets reduced water losses, digitalised operations, and greater resilience to extreme climate events.

Why now? AIMAG's chief financial officer Marco Malavolta said the deal completes a two-year process to reshape the company's debt and secure resources for its 2025-2028 business plan. He called the EIB "the ideal partner to help us pursue our operational and economic objectives with renewed momentum."

What's the backing? The financing is backed by InvestEU, the EU investment programme through which the EIB Group has mobilised more than €6 billion in Italy. AIMAG operates in an area with a high concentration of productive activity and significant exposure to climate impacts.

The signal: The EIB describes itself as Europe's leading public financier of the water sector. In 2025 alone, it supported Italian utilities with €837 million — positioning the AIMAG loan within a broader push to modernise essential infrastructure as climate pressures mount.
