CATL picks lithium-air as its next-generation battery bet

What's the deal? CATL has formally identified lithium-air battery technology as the primary focus of its future research. Chief Scientist Wu Kai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, set out the direction at the 2026 Equipment Power Forum in June 2026.

Why it matters: Lithium-air cells replace the heavy nickel/cobalt/manganese cathode hosts of conventional lithium-ion with an open architecture that pairs a pure lithium-metal anode with ambient oxygen as the cathode reactant. Shedding that dead weight lifts the theoretical energy-density ceiling to 12,000 Wh/kg — on par with gasoline — versus roughly 250-270 Wh/kg for mainstream lithium-ion and about 500 Wh/kg expected from solid-state.

Where the technology stands: Laboratory prototypes have already surpassed 1,200 Wh/kg, over four times today's production EV cells. Successful commercial scaling could enable ranges beyond 1,600km (about 1,000 miles) on a single charge. The chemistry remains sensitive to ambient moisture and CO2, which drives rapid degradation and low cycle life; a 2025 breakthrough from the Illinois Institute of Technology and Argonne National Laboratory used a room-temperature four-electron reaction and a solid-state ceramic-polymer electrolyte to address safety and longevity.

Context: The long-term bet coincides with the commercial stabilisation of CATL's intermediate sodium-ion packs, now deploying in passenger vehicles such as the GAC Aion UT and Changan Oshan 520, freeing engineering resources to target heavy-duty transport and grid storage.
