Miso Robotics acquires pizza-robotics pioneer Zume

What's the deal? Miso RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired the technology and intellectual property of Zume, the former pizza automation startup that shut down in 2023. The deal, closed in June 2026, includes Zume's hardware, software, and more than 300 patents spanning food robotics and packaging. Terms were not disclosed.

Who's Zume? Founded in 2015, it was among the first wave of restaurant robotics startups, initially aiming to automate pizza production end-to-end — including baking pizzas inside delivery vans en route to customers. Zume raised $450 million before pivoting to licensing and then, in 2020, to sustainable packaging designed to cut single-use plastics.

What's the endgame? Miso said the technology adds features to Flippy, its automated fry cook, and opens expansion into pizza robotics. Chief executive officer Rich HullDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → said the patents would let Miso "accelerate new features" and "strengthen our market-leading position through stepped-up patent licensing and enforcement."

Why now? The purchase follows Miso's February 2026 acquisition of restaurant operations platform ZignylDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, which it folded into Zippy, its AI-powered dashboard for operators. The back-to-back deals point to a buy-over-build strategy as Miso broadens its product line.

The signal: Restaurant robotics is consolidating as survivors absorb the assets of failed pioneers. With rivals including Hyphen, Chef RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Agápe Automation, and Lab37Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → still developing kitchen automation, Zume's $450 million worth of patents gives Miso both new capabilities and a sharper legal lever over competitors.
