One Raven launches privacy-first smart home platform with $5M seed

What's the deal? One Raven, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based smart home startup, launched Tuesday with a $5 million seed round led by proptech venture capital firm Fifth WallDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? One Raven claims it is the first privacy-focused smart home platform to keep homeowner data on premises rather than in the cloud. It has built its own tablet-sized server and proprietary code, letting every device run locally on the home network, with no subscriptions or monetised behavioural data.

How it works: The system pairs the server with configurable smart devices — thermostats, locks, leak detectors and security sensors — that arrive pre-paired and factory-configured. A phase two rollout will add video and doorbell cameras.

The hardware is built outside the US, with software developed in Arizona, and is priced between $2,500 and $3,500 for a typical single-family home. "It's not going to be the cheapest solution, partly because we're not selling your data, and partly because we're not charging ongoing subscriptions," Haldeman said.

Why now? Haldeman framed the launch against rising concern over data use in the AI era. "There's a gap in that all the private data you're creating within your home is being shared with Big Tech or being shared outside of your home," he said, adding that a privacy-first approach "is something that's really resonating."

What's the money for? One Raven, which has more than 15 full-time employees, will use the funding to hire across hardware engineering, software, field deployment and go-to-market roles in Phoenix. It plans to announce its first homebuilder partnerships later in the third quarter.

What could go wrong? One Raven competes with incumbents including AmazonDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Google and ADT on security. Its premium pricing sets it apart from cheap, subsidised rivals, but also raises the bar for consumer adoption.

The signal: Fifth Wall founder and CEO Brendan WallaceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → pointed to both the founders' track record and a shift in how consumers view data. "If you're not paying full price for a product, you're the product, and you are being sold," he said. "You are always paying at some level, you're just paying in the form of privacy."
