Erebor eyes $8B valuation as deposits quadruple to $4B
What's the deal? Erebor, the US digital bank founded by AndurilDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s Palmer LuckeyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and backed by Peter ThielDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, is in talks to raise at a valuation of at least $8bn, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the discussions. That would roughly double the $4.35bn it fetched in December 2025, when it raised $350 million. The company declined to comment, and the talks are early.
The numbers: Erebor's deposit base has jumped from $1.1bn in late March 2026 to $4.05bn by the close of Q2 2026, nearly quadrupling in three months. It added almost 400 customers over that period and expects to turn a profit by the end of 2026 — a rapid trajectory for a bank that only won its charter in February 2026.
What's the endgame? Named after the treasure mountain in Tolkien's The Hobbit , Erebor targets the customers stranded when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed in 2023, focusing on defence technology and cryptocurrency. It lends to hard-tech and defence manufacturers for equipment and venture debt, and handles deposits and payments in dollar-backed stablecoins. Crypto-backed lending has drawn less demand than expected.
Luckey moved to head off the obvious suspicion. "Zero percent of Erebor's deposit growth this quarter has come from my own companies," he said, adding that the rest came from "hundreds of new customers choosing Erebor because they want what we've built."
Going global: Erebor is reaching into riskier ground abroad. It has signed a preliminary deal with Banco de Venezuela to provide correspondent banking, a foothold in a country still under US sanctions — an early sign of international expansion for its stablecoin- and tech-focused model.
What could go wrong? The speed has drawn scrutiny. Erebor was the first bank to win a national charter under President Trump's second term, cleared by regulators within months. Senator Elizabeth Warren has raised "serious concerns," questioning whether the founders' political ties smoothed the path.
The signal: Erebor's backers — Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, 8VC and Lux Capital — map the emerging Washington–Silicon Valley axis, the same crowd bankrolling defence startups. A valuation roughly doubling in about a year stands out even in a frothy digital-banking space, underscoring investor appetite for a regulated, crypto-forward alternative to the niche SVB once filled.
