The company builds "AI Inbound Staff," a multilingual platform that pairs AI with WhatsApp and Instagram DMs to connect inbound tourists with local Japanese businesses.
Its AI agents automate inquiries, bookings, payments, and follow-ups around the clock, in multiple languages. Ikura will spend the funds on product development, expanded AI features, sales and onboarding hires, and marketing.
Why now? Inbound tourism to Japan is hitting record levels, but local hotels, restaurants, and experience providers struggle with language barriers, staff shortages, and reliance on costly online travel agencies (OTAs).
Ikura argues these businesses miss out on direct sales and lasting customer relationships because they lack the tools to handle foreign visitors directly. WhatsApp counts more than 3 billion monthly users across 180-plus countries, making it a natural channel for tourists who already use it at home.
What could go wrong? Ikura's model leans heavily on Meta's platforms, where it operates as a tech provider — leaving it exposed to policy or pricing shifts. It also faces entrenched OTAs and the risk that larger players move into AI-driven booking first.
The signal: Backing from HearstLab, the women-led investment arm of media group Hearst, alongside MPower PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → marks the kind of internationally connected support an early-stage company needs to win a market as inherently global as inbound tourism. For Japan, where a shrinking population makes tourism a vital growth engine, tools that help small operators reach the world directly — and keep revenue local rather than ceding it to OTAs — could prove pivotal.
