Coalex.ai raises angel round from Angels Way to build its AI 'trust layer'

What's the deal? Angels Way, a Portuguese investor community of 436 members, has invested in Coalex.aiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a platform that acts as a real-time supervisor for AI systems. The startup monitors autonomous AI agents used by organisations, flagging risky outputs for human review and ensuring decisions are ethical, safe, and compliant. Coalex.ai is the 12th startup in Angels Way's portfolio, which is now collectively valued at more than €40M.

The founding team brings experience from two Portuguese unicorns — Talkdesk and Feedzai — as well as the European Commission. The platform targets heavily regulated sectors: banking, financial services, insurance, healthcare, and pharma.

Why now? The EU AI Act's main provisions take effect in August 2026, and the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) has been live since 2025, setting digital resilience standards for the financial sector. Companies in regulated industries face mounting pressure to prove their AI systems comply with these frameworks.

Coalex.ai already has pilot clients in place. Hospital da LuzDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is using it to validate new treatment protocols automatically, and insurer Fidelidade has integrated it to ensure its autonomous agents stay compliant.

What could go wrong? CEO and co-founder Carlos Lebre Ribeiro cited an industry-wide problem: 95% of AI projects fail to deliver measurable results due to a lack of trust and quality assurance. Building that trust layer is a big promise. The startup must prove its health-score system — which rates AI actions on a zero-to-100 index — works reliably across diverse, high-stakes environments.

Competition in AI governance and compliance tooling is intensifying globally, and Coalex.ai will need to scale fast to establish itself before larger players move in.

The signal: Coalex.ai is entering a fast-forming market at an early stage, positioning its "trust layer" as essential infrastructure for enterprise AI deployment rather than a nice-to-have. With EU AI Act enforcement beginning in August 2026 and regulated sectors under simultaneous pressure from DORA, the compliance window is narrow — and the founders' pedigree from Talkdesk and Feedzai lends credibility in a space where incumbents have yet to consolidate. The planned 2027 round targeting the DACH region and the US will be the real test of whether a Portuguese startup can outpace better-funded global competitors in AI governance tooling.
