Channel Robotics raises $2.5M Seed+ to bring handheld endoscopic robotics to physicians

What's the deal? Channel Robotics, a San Diego-based medtech startup, has closed a $2.5M seed+ round led by True Ventures. The funding brings total capital raised to $4.6M, following a $2.1M seed round backed by Defined Ventures and Old Line Capital Partners.

The company is building a patented handheld AI-enabled endoscopic robotic platform — essentially a device that delivers robotic-level dexterity through existing flexible endoscopes, without requiring the large, expensive robotic systems hospitals typically need.

"Our mission is to democratize access to advanced endoscopic robotics," said co-founder Michael Yip. "This financing enables us to continue building a platform that can bring sophisticated robotic capabilities to physicians in a practical, scalable, and cost-effective way."

Why now? Surgical robotics has boomed, but most systems remain bulky and capital-intensive — limiting adoption to large hospitals. Channel Robotics sees an opening to bring robotic precision to ambulatory surgery centres and community practices that can't justify million-dollar installations.

The funds will support prototype refinement, engineering expansion, and preparation for an FDA submission targeted for 2027. Commercial launch would follow regulatory clearance.

What could go wrong? The FDA pathway is the obvious bottleneck. Medical device approvals are unpredictable, and any delays could stretch the company's runway thin at $4.6M in total funding. Channel will also need to prove that a handheld device can match the clinical outcomes of established robotic platforms — a high bar in a field where Intuitive Surgical and others have decades of data.

Competing against entrenched incumbents with deep pockets and hospital relationships is no small task for a seed-stage startup.

The signal: This deal reflects a broader trend in medtech: shrinking robotic systems from room-sized machines to handheld tools. Investors are betting that the next wave of surgical robotics won't look like the last one — it will be smaller, cheaper, and far more widely distributed.

Founded by physician-scientist Philip Weissbrod and roboticist Michael Yip, Channel sits at a growing intersection of AI, miniaturised robotics, and clinical need. If the technology works as promised, it could dramatically expand who gets access to advanced endoscopic procedures — and where.
