Wassist raises $1.1M pre-seed to bring no-code AI agents to WhatsApp commerce
What's the deal? WassistDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a startup building no-code AI agents for WhatsApp commerce, has raised $1.1M in pre-seed funding. The round was led by Playfair, with participation from Meta board member Charlie SonghurstDealroom has a profile for this one. The platform lets online retailers set up an AI shopping agent on WhatsApp in minutes — no engineering required. A brand enters its store URL and gets an agent trained in its tone of voice that can answer product questions, retrieve order updates, and recommend items. Payments flow through the website checkout but are surfaced within the WhatsApp thread itself.
Founder and chief executive officer Josh Warwick built the core product largely alone across weekend hackathons over 10 months. In that time, the platform grew from around 2,000 end-user conversations to more than 80,000, all without paid marketing. Wassist has been selected for Balderton's Launched Programme.
Why now? Several shifts have converged. WhatsApp expanded its Business API in 2022, and large language models have since become cheap enough to power natural conversation at scale. Then in November 2024, Meta removed the cost of outbound messaging entirely — making proactive WhatsApp outreach financially feasible for small businesses for the first time.
The engagement numbers make the case. Email open rates sit at around 20%; WhatsApp messages open at 98%, according to Meta. Click-through rates on WhatsApp run between 20% and 60%, compared with 1–2% for email. Wassist says cart recovery via WhatsApp is four times more effective than email.
What could go wrong? Wassist is entirely dependent on Meta's WhatsApp infrastructure. Any changes to API pricing, terms, or access could upend the business model overnight. The platform also integrates with Shopify and tools like Klaviyo and Recharge — meaning it sits atop a stack it doesn't control.
Competition looms too. As WhatsApp commerce grows more attractive, larger players with deeper pockets could move into the space quickly.
The signal: Playfair CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s lead here fits a pattern of early-stage bets on AI-native commerce infrastructure, and the angel lineup — a Meta board member, an Indeed co-founder, and Cleo's founder — suggests conviction that messaging platforms, not traditional web storefronts, will be the next major distribution layer. With Meta eliminating outbound messaging costs in late 2024 and WhatsApp's Business API steadily opening up, the economics of conversational commerce have shifted fast — and Wassist's leap from 2,000 to 80,000 end-user conversations without paid marketing hints at organic pull that larger players will be watching closely.
