JSW Energy invests US$20.4M to raise stake in Toshiba JSW Power Systems

What's the deal? JSW Energy has signed a US$20.4M deal to acquire an additional stake in Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited (TJPS), a manufacturer of supercritical steam turbines and generators for thermal power plants. The investment lifts JSW Energy's holding in TJPS from 4.6% to 20.7%.

Why now? JSW Energy is planning to nearly double its thermal capacity from 5,658 MW to 10,658 MW by FY2030. That expansion includes 3,200 MW currently under construction at Salboni — and securing a bigger stake in a key equipment manufacturer helps de-risk the supply chain.

What could go wrong? Betting heavily on thermal power capacity at a time when global energy policy increasingly favours renewables carries transition risk. If India's regulatory environment shifts faster than expected toward clean energy mandates, the returns on this thermal buildout could come under pressure.

The signal: Despite India's ambitious renewable energy targets, the country's surging electricity demand means thermal power still has a long runway. JSW Energy's move signals that large Indian energy firms see supercritical coal technology as a bridge fuel — and are willing to invest upstream to control costs and secure equipment access during a massive capacity expansion cycle.
