Japan's ugo raises ¥4B+ to deploy physical AI robots across infrastructure

What's the deal? Tokyo-based robotics startup ugo has closed its Series B3 round, bringing cumulative funding to roughly ¥4B (about $27M). NTT West led the round, joined by a roster of corporate investors spanning telecoms, railways, energy, real estate, retail, and logistics — including JR East Startup, Tokyo Gas, Daiwa House, and Hankyu Hanshin Innovation Partners, among others.

The funds raised through a third-party share allocation will go toward R&D in physical AI, expanding robotics solutions, strengthening mass production, and hiring engineers.

Why now? Japan's labour shortage is intensifying, and the government's "AI Robotics Strategy," published in March 2026, explicitly calls for real-world deployment of robots in inspection, security, and transport. ugo is riding that wave: its revenue has roughly doubled year-on-year for three consecutive years, and its compact inspection robot "ugo mini," launched in 2025, surpassed 100 units shipped within a year.

The company has also secured roles in national projects — a METI software development initiative for robotics and NEDO's deep-tech startup support programme — reinforcing its credibility with institutional backers.

What could go wrong? ugo's investor base is almost entirely corporate. That alignment gives it privileged access to real-world deployment sites, but it also means the company's growth trajectory depends heavily on those partners' willingness to integrate robots into operations. If adoption stalls — due to regulatory friction, worker pushback, or slower-than-expected ROI — the pipeline could dry up quickly.

Physical AI remains technically challenging, too. ugo is developing a domestic multi-legged inspection robot for rough terrain and participating in a national competition to build a general-purpose humanoid. Both are ambitious bets that could stretch resources.

The signal: This round reflects a broader pattern in Japan: critical-infrastructure operators are not just watching the robotics space — they're writing cheques. With the world's oldest population and a shrinking workforce, Japan is becoming a proving ground for physical AI at scale.

ugo's approach — combining its own robots with an OEM-ready platform (ugo Platform) — positions it as both a hardware maker and a software layer that other players can build on. If that platform gains traction, the company could evolve from a robot vendor into the operating system for Japan's physical AI infrastructure.
