CapMan Infra buys majority stake in Nordic helicopter operator HeliAir Sweden
What's the deal? CapMan Infra, the infrastructure arm of Finnish private asset manager CapMan, has agreed to acquire a majority stake in HeliAir Sweden, a leading Nordic helicopter operator and lessor. The deal gives CapMan a foothold in mission-critical aerial services including firefighting, power grid inspections, vegetation management, and military training support.
HeliAir is headquartered in Sweden and serves both public and private sector customers across the Nordics. It operates with vertically integrated in-house capabilities spanning maintenance, fuelling, and training.
CapMan manages €7.2B in assets. Financial terms of the HeliAir deal were not disclosed.
Why now? Growing demand for aerial firefighting — driven by increasingly severe wildfire seasons across Europe — and ageing power grids requiring more frequent inspections make helicopter services a resilient infrastructure play. Defence spending is also rising across the Nordics, with Sweden's recent NATO accession amplifying demand for military training support.
"Its services support public safety and critical infrastructure," said Ibrahim Makdessi, investment manager at CapMan Infra.
What could go wrong? Helicopter operations are capital-intensive and tightly regulated. Fleet expansion requires significant upfront investment, and any safety incident could damage the company's reputation and contracts. HeliAir also depends on government procurement cycles for firefighting and defence work, which can be unpredictable.
Competition from drone technology could eventually encroach on some of HeliAir's inspection and surveillance services, though manned helicopters remain essential for heavy-lift and firefighting missions.
The signal: Infrastructure investors are increasingly looking beyond traditional assets like roads and utilities toward specialised service providers that underpin public safety. CapMan's bet on helicopter services reflects a broader trend of private capital flowing into niche, mission-critical operations that offer steady, contract-backed revenues.
"With CapMan Infra as our new majority owner, we will have a strong partner to support our growth ambitions, further invest in our fleet and capabilities, and continue delivering reliable, high-quality services to our customers across the Nordics and selected European markets," said Joel Backlund, chief executive officer of HeliAir.
