TrueShort raises $12M to make AI-generated vertical films
What's the deal? TrueShort, a startup building an app for AI-generated vertical films, has raised $12M in funding led by Khosla Ventures. Former DreamWorks Animation chief executive officer Jeffrey Katzenberg also backed the round.
The company is betting that AI can produce short-form, mobile-first video content — essentially films shot in vertical format for smartphone viewing.
Why now? The timing sits at the intersection of two powerful trends: the explosion of generative AI video tools and the dominance of vertical video as a content format. TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have trained billions of users to consume stories in portrait mode, but scripted, higher-quality vertical content remains scarce.
AI video generation has also improved dramatically in the past year, making it feasible to produce watchable content at a fraction of traditional production costs.
What could go wrong? AI-generated video still struggles with consistency, coherent storytelling, and the uncanny-valley problem that can alienate viewers. Audiences may resist content they know was made by machines, especially in a format already saturated with human-created clips.
There's also the Quibi question. Katzenberg's previous bet on premium short-form mobile video — the $1.75B streaming service Quibi — collapsed in 2020 after just six months. TrueShort operates in similar territory, though at a vastly different cost structure thanks to AI.
The signal: TrueShort's focus on mobile-first, short-form content — Dealroom identifies the company's niche as true crime documentary series — suggests it is targeting a specific genre rather than competing broadly with studios. Khosla Ventures and Katzenberg backing an early-growth startup in this space indicates a bet that AI-native vertical video can succeed where Quibi's expensive, traditionally produced model could not, largely because the cost structure is fundamentally different.
