Turkey's TMSF sells İstikbal Furniture to Paşalı Group for 16.5B TL

What's the deal? Turkey's Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) has sold İstikbal Furniture, one of the country's largest furniture companies, to Paşalı Group for 16.5 billion TL (roughly $500M). Three companies bid in the auction held at TMSF headquarters, with Paşalı Group submitting the highest offer.

Why now? The sale comes after a failed first attempt. An earlier auction valued İstikbal at 12.5 billion TL but was cancelled due to insufficient participation. The second round drew more interest — and a price tag roughly 4 billion TL higher, which experts say reflects renewed investor appetite for Turkey's furniture sector.

Paşalı Group, founded in 1978, operates in construction, automotive, vehicle rental, and tourism. It moved its headquarters to Istanbul in 1991 and is led by Adem Paşalı. The İstikbal acquisition marks its first major move into furniture and retail.

What could go wrong? Integrating a large consumer brand is no small task for a conglomerate with no prior furniture experience. İstikbal carries significant brand recognition in Turkey, and any missteps in retail operations or supply chain management could erode that value quickly.

TMSF-administered companies often come with baggage — legal complexities, workforce issues, or deferred investments — that can complicate a transition.

The signal: The 32% jump in sale price between the two auctions suggests growing confidence in Turkish consumer-facing businesses, even amid a turbulent macroeconomic backdrop. For Paşalı Group, it is a bet that diversification into retail and manufacturing can offset cyclical risks in construction and tourism.
