StepFun increases registered capital to ¥60.5M

What's the deal? StepFun (阶跃星辰), a Shanghai-based artificial intelligence startup, increased its registered capital from roughly ¥57.3M to ¥60.5M (about $8.3M), according to a business registration change filed on May 19. Corporate records platform Tianyancha showed the update.

The company, formally known as Shanghai StepFun Intelligent Technology Co., was founded in April 2023. Its legal representative is Yin Qi, and it operates across AI application development, systems integration, and AI theory and algorithm software development.

Why now? This is not StepFun's first capital increase — the company has raised its registered capital multiple times since its founding two years ago. The steady cadence of increases suggests ongoing fundraising activity as China's AI race intensifies.

What could go wrong? Registered capital changes in China don't always reflect fresh outside investment — they can stem from internal restructuring or shareholder commitments. Without disclosure of specific investors or a confirmed funding round, the strategic significance of this move remains unclear.

The signal: StepFun sits in the thick of China's crowded AI startup landscape, competing with better-known players like Moonshot AIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Zhipu AI. Repeated capital increases point to sustained investor appetite for Chinese foundation-model companies, even as US export controls on advanced chips complicate the sector's growth trajectory.
