Amazon snaps up $100M Swiss robot startup Rivr to crack doorstep delivery

What's the deal? Amazon has acquired RivrDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Zurich-based startup that makes four-legged, stair-climbing delivery robots designed for last-mile parcel delivery. The deal's price tag was not disclosed. Rivr, which spun out of ETH ZurichDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s Robotics Systems Lab in 2023, was last valued at $100 million.

Amazon was no stranger to Rivr before the deal. Both the Amazon Industrial Innovation FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s family office — participated in Rivr's $22.2 million seed round in 2024, signalling early interest in the startup's technology.

CEO and co-founder Marko BjelonicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → announced the acquisition on LinkedIn, saying it would "accelerate our vision of building General Physical AI through doorstep delivery, bringing robotics and AI closer to real-world deployment at scale."

Why now? Rivr had just begun proving its technology in the real world. The startup ran a pilot in Austin with package delivery firm Veho, with ambitions to scale to 100 bots by 2026 — an early operational track record that likely made it an attractive buy.

Timing also aligns with Amazon's broader push to automate its delivery operations, as competition in last-mile logistics intensifies and physical AI matures from lab concept to deployable product.

What could go wrong? Integrating cutting-edge robotics into Amazon's sprawling, operationally complex logistics network is no small feat. Whether Rivr's stair-climbing robots can perform reliably at scale — across varied urban environments and weather conditions — remains unproven.

The acquisition is also a bet on physical AI, a field that promises much but has yet to deliver at commercial scale. Development timelines could slip, and deployment costs may be higher than anticipated.

The signal: Europe's robotics sector is booming. Equity funding jumped 130% in 2025 versus the prior year, with startups raising €1.6 billion, according to Sifted data. Rivr's exit is a validation of ETH Zurich's growing role as a launchpad for world-class robotics companies — alongside ANYbotics, Mimic RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. More broadly, the deal reflects Big Tech's growing appetite for physical AI startups. Amazon is making a clear bet: the next frontier in e-commerce isn't just faster fulfilment centres, but robots on doorsteps.
