Gecko Robotics lands $71M Navy deal to speed up ship inspections with AI

The five-year deal — initially covering $54 million in work — begins with 18 ships in the Pacific fleet, including destroyers, amphibious ships, and littoral combat ships. Crucially, it is structured as an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract, meaning agencies across the US government can access the technology.
Gecko's robots, drones, and fixed sensors collect structural data at scale, which is then parsed by its AI-powered platform, Cantilever, to flag required repairs. The company says prior deployments show the system identifies problems up to 50 times faster and more accurately than traditional inspection.
Why now? The Navy has set a target of keeping 80% of its fleet deployment-ready by 2027 — a goal it has long struggled to meet. Maintenance events often run 20% to 100% longer than estimated, and the Congressional Budget Office projects that DDG-51 class destroyers will spend more than a quarter of their planned service life out of the fleet for maintenance.
Navy leaders have cited the prospect of conflict with China by 2027 as a key driver behind the urgency to fix this. That strategic pressure makes a faster, AI-driven inspection system a genuinely operational — not merely administrative — priority.
Gecko itself is well-positioned to take on a contract of this scale. The company reached unicorn status in June 2025 after raising a $125 million Series D, bringing its total funding to $347 million and its valuation to $1.25 billion. Founders Fund and Y Combinator are among its backers.
What could go wrong? Scaling from a Pacific fleet pilot to government-wide deployment is rarely smooth. Integration with entrenched Navy maintenance workflows, stringent data security requirements, and the logistics of servicing a dispersed fleet could slow progress. IDIQ contracts also carry no guaranteed spend beyond the initial tranche — the full $71 million is a ceiling, not a commitment.
There is also a structural question: if maintenance events continue to outrun their schedules, faster diagnostics alone will not close the readiness gap without corresponding improvements in shipyard capacity and workforce.
The signal: Defence robotics is moving from experiment to infrastructure. The IDIQ structure here is telling — it positions Gecko as a platform vendor to the US government, not a one-off contractor. The company's technology spans defence, energy, and manufacturing, and a high-profile Navy contract of this kind validates the entire category.
As militaries globally grapple with ageing assets and workforce shortages, AI-driven inspection is fast becoming a procurement priority — and Gecko is staking a claim to lead it.
