Vima Therapeutics raises $100M to develop first pill for dystonia and Parkinson's
What's the deal? Vima Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech startup, has expanded its Series A funding to $100 million to develop a pill that could treat dystonia and Parkinson's disease — two conditions that currently have no fully satisfactory treatments.

Dystonia is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions, affecting more than 160,000 adults and children in the US. It shares underlying biology with Parkinson's disease, which affects over one million Americans.
Why now? Vima has just dosed the first patient in a Phase 2 clinical trial for its lead drug, VIM0423 — the step that turns a promising compound into something being tested on real patients. Early Phase 1 data showed the drug was safe and well-tolerated, giving the company enough confidence to move forward and investors enough confidence to write bigger cheques.
The company plans to start a second Phase 2 trial for Parkinson's disease by mid-2026, with results from both trials expected in the first half of 2027.
What could go wrong? Phase 2 trials are where most drugs fail. VIM0423 has cleared early safety hurdles, but showing that it actually works — and works better than existing options — is a much higher bar. If either trial produces disappointing results, the company would face a difficult path to further funding and eventual approval.
The signal: VIM0423 targets the same brain signalling pathway as older treatments for movement disorders, but is designed to do so more precisely, avoiding the side effects that have long limited those drugs. If it works, it would be the first new oral therapy for dystonia — a disease where patients currently rely on injections or, in severe cases, brain surgery.
The broader bet here is that movement disorders, long neglected by the pharmaceutical industry, are becoming a serious area of investment as better-targeted drugs become possible.
