Netflix buys Ben Affleck's stealth AI filmmaking startup InterPositive

InterPositive builds AI models trained on a production's own footage — its dailies — to help filmmakers reframe shots, adjust lighting, and remove stunt wires in postproduction. It does not generate video from text prompts.
Why now? Affleck said he founded the company after seeing early generative AI tools fall short for filmmakers, and built something purpose-designed for their workflow. Netflix, which rarely acquires companies, saw a unique fit: tools that keep filmmakers in control rather than replacing them.
The deal lands as Hollywood's stance on AI shifts. Disney last year struck a deal to let OpenAI use its franchises in the Sora video generator — a sign that studios are moving from resistance to engagement.
What could go wrong? Netflix says it has no plans to sell InterPositive's tools commercially, limiting them to its own creative partners. That constraint may frustrate broader industry adoption and limit the technology's impact beyond Netflix's ecosystem.
Affleck himself acknowledged the tension: he saw AI as both "a real opportunity and a real authentic danger." Whether Netflix can hold the line on keeping the tools filmmaker-led — rather than cost-cutting instruments — will be closely watched.
The signal: This is a bet that the future of AI in film isn't text-to-video generation, but production-aware tools trained on a project's own footage. Netflix's chief product and technology officer Elizabeth Stone was explicit: this is not about making content faster or cheaper, but better.
The acquisition also marks a notable shift in how Hollywood talent engages with AI — not by opposing it, but by building it on their own terms. Affleck joins a growing cohort of creators shaping the technology from the inside rather than the picket line.
