Eight Sleep hits $1.5B valuation with $50M round, eyes FDA sleep apnea clearance
Eight Sleep has raised $50M at a $1.5B valuation in a round led by Tether Investments, achieving unicorn status. The smart mattress startup has raised over $310M to date and, unusually for consumer hardware, turned free-cash-flow positive in 2025.
The funding will go toward new products, global expansion to more than 34 countries, and clinical validation — including a pending FDA filing for sleep apnea detection that could shift Eight Sleep from wellness gadget to regulated medical device.
The raise follows a $100M round last August and comes as the company sharpens its pivot from sleep tracking to predictive health. Eight Sleep is developing an AI agent that adjusts mattress temperature, elevation, and firmness before users fall asleep, trained on over a billion hours of proprietary sleep data. Early pilots show the system is already nudging users to change exercise timing, caffeine intake, and sleep schedules.
Last year it launched three new products, including the Pod 5 and a thermal blanket. Clinical studies linked the devices to a reduction in menopausal hot flashes of more than half and improvements in cardiovascular recovery.
Hardware at scale is unforgiving. Last October, an AWS outage caused Eight Sleep's mattress covers to overheat when they lost server connectivity — a reminder that cloud-dependent hardware carries reliability risks that software products don't.
Competition is also intensifying on two fronts: BedJet and Chilipad by Sleepme on temperature control, and Oura and Whoop in biometric tracking. An FDA clearance for sleep apnea detection would be transformative, but regulatory timelines are unpredictable and approval is far from guaranteed.
Eight Sleep's raise is a small but telling data point in a market obsessed with AI software: profitable hardware companies can still command billion-dollar valuations. Its subscription model and premium pricing — mattress covers start around $2,000 — have produced the kind of recurring revenue more typical of SaaS businesses.
The bigger bet is on the bedroom as a health platform. If Eight Sleep can secure FDA clearance and build a clinically validated AI health layer, it could move from luxury purchase to medical infrastructure — and unlock insurance and employer markets that dwarf its current consumer base.
