Zelos raises $300M+ as robovan fleet tops 20,000 vehicles
Zelos Technologies, a Chinese autonomous delivery startup, has closed a funding round exceeding $300 million, pushing its valuation past 10 billion yuan (roughly $1.5 billion). This marks the company's sixth round since its 2021 founding. Total disclosed funding now surpasses $800 million.
The Beijing-based firm develops L4 autonomous delivery vehicles for urban logistics. Its fleet — now over 20,000 vehicles strong — operates across 300 cities in more than 10 countries.
The round follows Zelos' January merger with Cainiao's autonomous driving unit. Alibaba's logistics arm took a stake in the company, contributing its robovan business and cash. The deal doubled Zelos' fleet overnight.
Momentum was already building. In October 2025, Zelos won a 7,000-vehicle order from China Post — the world's largest L4 freight vehicle procurement contract. The company claims an 88% market share in China's medium and large robovan segment.
Competition is intensifying. JD, Meituan, and SF Express are all investing in autonomous delivery. Passenger vehicle tech firms entered the space in 2025.
Regulatory uncertainty remains. While China has issued supportive guidelines, commercialisation rules vary by city. Overseas expansion adds further complexity — each market requires local compliance and partnerships.
Capital demands could strain finances. Autonomous fleets require continuous R&D and infrastructure investment. Zelos must balance growth with the push toward profitability.
Zelos' raise reflects a broader shift: L4 autonomy is finding its footing in logistics before passenger transport. While robotaxis struggle with the leap from L2 to L3, delivery vehicles operating at lower speeds with cargo have closed the commercial loop first.
Industry forecasts predict 100,000 autonomous delivery vehicles in China by 2026, rising to 750,000 by 2030. Zelos' co-founder has said 10,000 vehicles marks the explosion point for the sector. With 20,000 now deployed, the company believes the industry has crossed that threshold — and is accelerating toward 50,000, the estimated break-even line.
