Impact Tags & SDGs

Dealroom maps 9,000+ companies to the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals — so investors and researchers can find purpose-driven startups working on the world's biggest challenges.

🌍 Dealroom's impact tags are based on the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda. Over 9,000+ startups have been manually classified. A company can hold multiple SDG tags if its work spans several goals.
Understanding Impact Tags
A company that addresses one or more UN SDGs through its core products or services. On Dealroom, impact startups are identified by analysing business models, mission statements, and described outcomes — not just marketing language.
The data team uses SDG-specific keywords to filter companies, then reviews public information — including business models, product descriptions, and mission statements — to confirm affinity with each goal. Tags are applied only where there is a credible, direct connection.
Core impact means the SDG is central to the company's business model — their product exists to address the goal (e.g., The Ocean Cleanup). Side impact means the company creates positive externalities as a by-product of its operations, but impact isn't the core business (e.g., an e-scooter company reducing urban emissions).
Climate tech refers to technologies focused on decarbonising the global economy (PwC definition) — a broader term than clean tech. Clean tech is often used synonymously with clean energy specifically. On Dealroom, both fall primarily under SDG 7 (Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) is a set of non-financial standards used to evaluate a company's practices — how they operate. Impact goes further: impact startups actively create measurable positive change for people and the planet through their products and services, not just by managing their own risks responsibly.
Yes — many companies address multiple goals simultaneously. A food tech startup tackling food waste might be tagged under SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) at the same time. Tags are not mutually exclusive.
Tagging is an ongoing process — company taxonomy may change as more information becomes available. Dealroom relies on publicly available data, which means some nuances are difficult to verify at scale. If you believe a company's impact tags are inaccurate, you can flag it via the edit request flow on the company profile.
