About ZopNow

ZopNow was an online grocery delivery platform founded in 2011 by IIT-Kanpur alumni Mukesh Singh and Bal Krishn Birla. The venture was headquartered in Bengaluru, India. The initial idea came to Mukesh Singh while waiting in a long supermarket queue, sparking the concept of an online service to save customers from such hassles.

Initially, the company operated on an inventory-led model, managing its own warehouses. However, in 2014, it pivoted to a 'scale-local' marketplace model. This strategic shift involved partnering with large retail chains like HyperCity, More, Metro, and Star Bazaar, effectively using their stores as fulfillment centers. This asset-light approach allowed ZopNow to offer a wide product range without the costs of warehousing, such as rent and potential pilferage. Revenue was generated through commissions from retailers, advertising on its platform, and shipping fees. The company also began offering its technology as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution to offline retailers wanting to establish an online presence.

The company secured approximately $12 million in funding from investors including Accel Partners, Qualcomm Ventures, Times Internet, and Dragoneer Investment Group. By 2015, ZopNow was valued at around $50 million. At its peak, the platform operated in 10 cities across India, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi (NCR). Co-founder Bal Krishn Birla departed the company in 2013. In 2016, Mukesh Singh stepped down as CEO to focus on technology, and Raj Pandey, a former JP Morgan executive director, took over as CEO to lead business operations, investor relations, and marketing.

Despite its early presence in the e-grocery market, ZopNow faced challenges in raising further capital. By March 2019, the company had ceased all operations. Its technology assets were reportedly sold to the retail chain More. Following the shutdown, founder Mukesh Singh launched a new B2B venture called ZopSmart, which leverages the core technology and engineering team from ZopNow to provide end-to-end e-commerce solutions for retailers. The ZopNow website now redirects to ZopSmart.
