Honestbee

Honestbee was established in Singapore on July 23, 2015, by co-founders Joel Sng, Isaac Tay, and Jonathan Low. The company's genesis can be traced back to Lifeopp, a job portal Sng founded in 2012 to offer flexible work opportunities. After Lifeopp ceased operations in 2014, the founders leveraged its infrastructure to launch Honestbee as an online grocery delivery platform, with a mission to create jobs for those unable to work fixed hours.

The company operated on a hyper-local, asset-light business model, providing on-demand concierge services for grocery and food delivery. It partnered with major supermarkets and retailers like FairPrice and Jones the Grocer, deploying personal shoppers to pick items for customers who ordered through its app or website. Revenue was primarily generated through delivery fees. This model offered customers the convenience of same-day delivery from multiple stores in a single order, while providing retail partners with an expanded online presence.

Honestbee rapidly expanded its service offerings beyond its core grocery business. It launched a laundry collection and delivery service in Singapore in September 2016 and a food delivery arm in February 2017, which eventually rolled out to six other Asian markets. The company also briefly offered a movie ticket purchasing service in Singapore in late 2017. A significant milestone was the October 2018 launch of habitat by honestbee, a 60,000-square-foot, tech-enabled supermarket and dining destination in Singapore. This physical store integrated online and offline retail with features like cashless checkout and robotic collection points, aiming to create a multi-sensory experience.

The company's rapid, capital-intensive expansion across eight Asian regions, including Hong Kong, Japan, and Thailand, coupled with diversification into asset-heavy ventures like Habitat, placed significant strain on its finances. By early 2019, Honestbee was facing a severe cashflow crisis, leading to the suspension of services in multiple countries and a series of layoffs. After attempts to restructure under new leadership and secure further funding failed, the company was placed under liquidation in July 2020. The habitat site was subsequently taken over by RedMart as a fulfillment center.
