Zonoff

Zonoff was a company that provided a white-label Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) software and services platform, founded in 2011 by Mike Harris, who also served as its CEO. The company's mission was to enable major brands to launch smart home products for the mass market. Harris's prior experience as the founder and CEO of a systems integration company, which was sold to a national security provider, informed Zonoff's direction in the home automation space.

The company's core offering was an enterprise-scale Consumer IoT Platform designed for interoperability and reliability. This platform included the Z1 Software Suite, a user interface framework, hardware reference designs, data analytics, and an ecosystem of compatible devices. Zonoff's business model focused on providing this end-to-end solution to brands in sectors like retail, telecommunications, and new home construction, allowing them to offer smart home solutions under their own branding. Notable clients included the home security company ADT.

In December 2014, Zonoff received a significant funding round from ADT. A major turning point occurred in March 2017 when the company was effectively acquired by Ring, the video doorbell maker. As part of the deal, Zonoff's technology and its entire team, including engineers and leadership, transitioned to Ring to develop a comprehensive home security system. This move was framed as an acqui-hire. Subsequently, Ring itself was acquired by Amazon in 2018, integrating the foundational technology and expertise originally developed at Zonoff into Amazon's smart home and home automation offerings.
