Find inexpensive accommodations in India MoreLess
Zo Rooms, officially Zostel Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., entered the Indian hospitality market in 2014 as a budget hotel aggregator. It was founded by a team of seven entrepreneurs: Paavan Nanda, Dharamveer Singh Chouhan, Akhil Malik, Tarun Tiwari, Chetan Singh Chauhan, Abhishek Bhutra, and Siddharth Janghu. The founders came from diverse and prestigious academic backgrounds, including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), bringing a mix of business acumen and technical expertise to the venture. This venture was a pivot from their first enterprise, Zostel, a chain of backpacker hostels launched in 2013.
The company operated in the budget segment of India's hospitality sector, targeting travelers looking for affordable and standardized accommodations. Its business model was based on aggregating unbranded, low-budget hotels, and providing them with technology and standardized services to ensure a consistent guest experience. Zo Rooms utilized a mobile-first approach, with an app that allowed users to geo-detect their location and book the nearest available room, tapping into the increasing smartphone penetration in India. Revenue was generated on a commission model, where the company took a percentage of the sales generated through its platform. To ensure service quality, the company installed tablets in each partner hotel to track inventory live and gather instant guest feedback, aiming for high occupancy levels.
At its peak, Zo Rooms expanded rapidly, establishing a presence in over 50 cities with a network of more than 1,000 hotels and 11,000 rooms. The company attracted significant venture capital, raising approximately $47 million from investors including Tiger Global Management and Orios Venture Partners. However, the company's trajectory was dramatically altered by a prospective merger with its primary competitor, OYO Rooms, in late 2015. The deal, which was reported as an all-stock acquisition, ultimately fell through, leading to a protracted and public legal battle between the two companies. Zostel claimed that a binding term sheet was violated after it had transferred its business operations, while OYO maintained the agreement was non-binding and terminated it. The legal dispute spanned several years, with various rulings and appeals, and ultimately the Delhi High Court set aside an arbitral award that had been in Zostel's favor in May 2025. Following the collapse of the OYO deal and the ensuing legal struggles, Zo Rooms ceased its primary operations.
