Stayzilla, legally known as Inasra Technologies Pvt. Ltd., was an Indian online marketplace for accommodations, founded in 2005 by the team of Yogendra Vasupal, his wife Rupal Yogendra, and friend Sachit Singhi. Initially launched as Inasra, an online travel agency for hotel bookings, the company rebranded to Stayzilla in 2010 and pivoted to an aggregator model. The founders, described as avid travelers, aimed to create a comprehensive platform for all types of "stays," moving beyond conventional hotels to include homestays, guesthouses, and lodges. This focus was particularly on India's Tier II and Tier III cities, which were often overlooked by larger booking platforms.

The company's business model was commission-based, earning revenue from property owners for each booking facilitated through its platform. Stayzilla's key value proposition was its extensive and diverse inventory, providing travelers with a wide array of choices, from ultra-budget rooms to more luxurious options across thousands of towns. At its peak, the platform listed over 55,000 properties. To fuel its ambitious growth, Stayzilla secured over $34 million in funding across several rounds from prominent investors including Matrix Partners, Nexus Venture Partners, and the Indian Angel Network. This capital was instrumental in expanding its reach and enhancing its technology.

Despite its first-mover advantage, the company faced significant operational hurdles. A core challenge was the need to educate both property owners and travelers in less tech-savvy markets on how to use an online platform, which incurred high financial and opportunity costs. The market also grew fiercely competitive with the entry of heavily funded rivals like OYO Rooms and the expansion of established players such as MakeMyTrip and Goibibo. This forced Stayzilla into discount-driven competition, leading to a high cash burn rate that its revenue model could not sustain. By the fiscal year ending March 2016, the company reported significant losses against its revenues. These financial pressures, coupled with a failure to raise further funding, led to downsizing and cost-cutting measures. Ultimately, Stayzilla suspended its operations in February 2017, citing an unsustainable business model and the unique challenges of the Indian market. The shutdown was compounded by a legal dispute with an advertising vendor over unpaid dues, which resulted in the arrest of co-founder Yogendra Vasupal, causing severe damage to the company's credibility.
